Sam’s first few months at Wolf’s Way were no-nonsense. He was a man who said what he meant and wasted little time on small talk.

His first day, he walked the property with Chilo, the head groom, who had been fulfilling barn management duties since his boss had died. Charlie trailed behind, always observing.

Sam checked to make sure Wolf’s Way had sufficient space for active equine life. They inspected the fence security and shelter for the arrival of stallions. He went from A to Z, checking the exercise yards, mare boxes, stallion barns, breeding units, foaling paddocks, vet and laboratory area, and hay and feed facilities.

Afterward, he turned to Chilo. “I want to sit down with you and create a concrete plan to enhance the proximity of each unit to the water lines, utility connections, pastures, and roads. We need to make sure everything is coordinated, but each area needs to function independently.”

“Yes.” Chilo, a Mexican gaucho and experienced horseman, smiled his agreement. “Nothing has really been overhauled since Mr. Charlie left us.”

Charlie moved closer and barked his approval. He liked Sam’s business acumen. Then, he scampered off into the pasture where Aramis grazed contentedly. The dog scooted circles around the horse, as the stallion stomped the ground and called out to him.
